Shopify store testing: a checklist before you launch

A Shopify store can look finished and still lose sales on a broken variant picker, a discount that does not apply or a shipping rate that is missing for one country. This page covers what to test in a Shopify store, how to test checkout safely, and a task your AI beta tester can run.

Who it’s for

  • Merchants launching a new Shopify store or theme
  • Shopify agencies and freelancers handing a store to a client
  • Store owners who installed new apps or changed shipping and taxes
  • Brands preparing for a sale or product drop

What Shopify store testing covers

Shopify store testing is running through your store the way a shopper would, from landing on a collection to the order confirmation email, before real customers do. Shopify handles hosting and payments, but your theme, apps, products, discounts and shipping rules are yours, and that is where most store bugs live.

A good Shopify beta test covers the full purchase path at mobile width, every variant and discount that matters, and the apps layered on top of the theme. It never uses a real card.

Before you test: make checkout safe

Shopify lets you place test orders without real money. Common options:

  • Shopify Payments test mode or the Bogus Gateway on a development store, which accept test card numbers.
  • A 100% discount code for an end-to-end order on a live store, then cancel and refund it.
  • Testing up to the payment step and stopping, which is enough for most checkout checks.

Tell every beta tester which option you are using. A beta tester should never enter a real card.

How to test a Shopify store, step by step

  1. Choose the store and theme to test. A theme preview, a development store or a password-protected store before launch.
  2. Set up safe payments. Turn on test mode or the Bogus Gateway, or tell testers to stop at the payment step.
  3. List what matters. Your best-selling products, products with many variants, active discount codes, and each shipping zone you sell to.
  4. Shop on a phone width first. Browse a collection, open a product, pick variants, add to cart, apply a discount and go to checkout.
  5. Repeat on desktop and with a second address in another shipping zone.
  6. Complete a test order and check the confirmation page and email.
  7. Fix, re-test and schedule. Run the purchase path again after fixes and after every app or theme change.

What to test in a Shopify store

  • Navigation and collections: menus, collection filters and sorting, search results, empty collections.
  • Product pages: every variant (size, color) updates the price, image and availability; sold-out variants are clear; quantity limits work.
  • Cart: adding, updating and removing items, the cart drawer on mobile, upsell apps, notes and gift options.
  • Discounts: automatic discounts, codes, free shipping thresholds, combinations that should and should not stack.
  • Shipping and taxes: rates for each shipping zone, local pickup, free shipping rules, tax display in prices.
  • Checkout: address validation, express checkout buttons, order summary, error messages for declined test cards.
  • Order emails and pages: the order confirmation page and email, links back to the store.
  • Apps: reviews, subscriptions, wishlists, pop-ups and chat widgets often add console errors, slow pages or overlap other elements on mobile.
  • Theme and content: placeholder text from the theme, broken image links, policies (refund, privacy, terms, shipping) linked in the footer and checkout.
  • Mobile: much store traffic comes from phones, so test the full purchase path at mobile width.

Shopify store testing checklist

Browsing

  • Every menu item and collection opens and shows the right products.
  • Filters and sorting change results correctly, and an empty filter result shows a message.
  • Search finds products by name and handles typos or no results gracefully.

Product pages

  • Selecting each variant updates price, image, SKU availability and the add-to-cart button.
  • Sold-out variants cannot be added, and the message is clear.
  • Product images zoom or open on mobile, and descriptions have no theme placeholders.

Cart and discounts

  • Quantity changes and removals update totals immediately.
  • Each discount code applies, shows the saving, and rejects invalid or expired codes clearly.
  • Free shipping thresholds and automatic discounts appear when they should.

Checkout (test mode)

  • Shipping rates appear for every zone you sell to.
  • Taxes and totals match what the cart showed.
  • A declined test card shows a clear error, and a successful test payment reaches the confirmation page.
  • The confirmation email arrives with correct items, totals and links.

Apps, theme and trust

  • Pop-ups and chat widgets do not cover the add-to-cart or checkout buttons on mobile.
  • No console errors from apps on product and cart pages.
  • Refund, shipping, privacy and terms policies are linked in the footer and checkout.

Example Shopify bug report

Title: "SPRING20" discount applies in cart but is removed at checkout
Store: Theme preview, development store, Bogus Gateway enabled
Environment: Chrome, mobile width 390 px
Severity: High (customers see a higher price at payment and abandon)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Add "Linen Shirt / Medium / Sand" to the cart
2. Open the cart drawer and apply the code SPRING20
3. Note the 20% saving in the cart total
4. Tap "Check out"

Expected: Discount carried into checkout and shown in the order summary
Actual: Checkout shows the full price and no discount line. Re-entering
the code says it can't be combined with the automatic discount.

Evidence: annotated screenshots of cart and checkout, screen recording

Common Shopify store bugs

  1. Variant images not changing when a variant is selected.
  2. A discount code that works in the cart but not at checkout, or the reverse.
  3. Pop-up apps covering the add-to-cart button on mobile.
  4. Shipping not available for a region the store sells to.
  5. The theme's default "Your content here" text left on a page.

Common mistakes in Shopify store testing

  • Testing only on desktop. The cart drawer, sticky buttons and pop-ups behave very differently on phones.
  • Using one product. Bugs hide in products with many variants, low stock or special shipping rules.
  • Skipping discount combinations. Automatic discounts and codes interact in ways that surprise shoppers.
  • Forgetting to turn off test mode or remove the 100% discount code after testing.
  • Installing apps straight on the live theme. Test app changes on a duplicate theme first.

What to fix first

  1. Anything that stops a purchase: add-to-cart failures, checkout errors, missing shipping rates.
  2. Wrong money: prices, discounts, taxes or totals that disagree between pages.
  3. Mobile blockers: pop-ups or widgets covering key buttons.
  4. Missing trust signals: policies, contact details, broken images.
  5. Polish: theme placeholders, spacing and copy.

Manual testing vs an AI beta tester

Real shoppers tell you whether your products, photos and prices make them want to buy. An automated tester can't measure that, can't test a real payment or real card behavior, and doesn't replace a certified accessibility audit.

An AI beta tester such as betatest.ing covers the repetitive purchase path. It browses the store in a real browser at mobile and desktop widths, tries variants, cart changes and the discount codes you list, and goes through checkout in test mode or stops before paying. It never places a real order. Each bug comes with steps, severity, annotated screenshots and a screen recording, and the run ends with a report and a quality score. You can schedule it so the purchase path is re-checked after app installs, theme edits and before big promotions.

After launch

Retest after installing apps, changing themes, editing shipping or running a big promotion. A quick scheduled pass on the purchase path catches breakage before customers do.

The test task

What you send your AI beta tester. It works out the steps and tests like a real user.

Beta test my Shopify store [STORE URL] as a shopper, using checkout only in test mode: [TEST PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS]. Browse the menu, collections, filters and search. Open several product pages and switch every variant, checking the price, image and stock update. Add, change and remove items in the cart, try the discount code [DISCOUNT CODE] and check free shipping thresholds. Go through checkout with a test address in a few shipping zones, check shipping rates, taxes and the order summary, and stop before paying if test mode is not available. Check the footer policies, contact page and any pop-ups or app widgets. Repeat the full purchase path at mobile width. Never enter a real card. Log each problem as a finding with steps to reproduce and an annotated screenshot, record the checkout, and end with a report that scores trust, product pages, cart and checkout, and mobile with the top fixes.

Fill in your details

Here, or later in the chat with your tester.

  • [STORE URL] Your store or theme preview URL (and store password if it has one)
  • [TEST PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS] e.g. "Bogus Gateway is on, use card number 1" or "stop before payment"
  • [DISCOUNT CODE] A discount code to test, or "none"

What the AI beta tester checks

  • Menus, collections, filters, sorting and search
  • Product variants: price, image and availability
  • Cart drawer and cart page on desktop and mobile
  • Discount codes and free shipping thresholds
  • Shipping rates and taxes for several zones
  • Checkout in test mode or up to the payment step
  • Policies, contact page and footer links
  • App widgets and pop-ups that slow or cover the page

What you get

  • Bugs with steps to reproduce and the product or page
  • Annotated screenshots of each issue
  • A recording of the full purchase path
  • A report scoring trust, product pages, cart, checkout and mobile
  • A list of quick wins to improve conversion

How to run it with betatest.ing

  1. Add your store as a project; add the store password if it is password-protected.
  2. Set up Shopify test mode or the Bogus Gateway, or decide the tester stops before payment.
  3. Send the Shopify store testing task with your test payment instructions.
  4. Review the findings and re-run the purchase path after you fix them.

Tips

  • List your best-selling products in the task so they get tested first.
  • Test discounts in combinations, since stacking rules cause many support tickets.
  • Check every app you installed on mobile; many inject pop-ups that overlap the add-to-cart button.
  • Re-test after theme updates and before every sale.

Shopify store testing: FAQ

How do I test a Shopify checkout without paying?

Use Shopify Payments test mode or the Bogus Gateway on a development store with test card numbers, or create a 100% discount and refund the order. A beta tester should never use a real card.

Can the AI beta tester test a password-protected store?

Yes. Save the store password with the project and it enters it in the browser before testing.

Will it place real orders?

No. It tests checkout in test mode only, or stops before payment, and never makes real payments.

What does it check besides checkout?

Navigation, collections, product variants, cart, discounts, shipping and taxes, policies, app widgets, copy and mobile layout.

How often should I test my store?

Before launch, after theme or app changes, after shipping or tax edits, and before big promotions.

How do I test a Shopify theme before publishing it?

Duplicate your live theme, make changes on the copy and use its preview link to test. The preview shows real products and settings without affecting what customers see, so you can run the full purchase path before publishing.

What should I fix first in a Shopify store?

Fix anything that stops a purchase first: add-to-cart failures, checkout errors and missing shipping rates. Then fix wrong prices, discounts or totals, and apps or pop-ups covering buttons on mobile. Theme placeholders and visual polish come last.

Can I test a Shopify store before it launches?

Yes. Keep the store password protected, enable test mode or the Bogus Gateway, and run test orders through the whole checkout. Share the storefront password with your testers so they can reach the store.
